Before Christmas, I sent a survey out to my list to ask about what they wanted in future programs and the results became the inspiration for a new Home Study Program I’ve created called “It’s Not What You Think, It’s What You Feel”.
Interest was created by posting a free video series on my blog over a seven day period. It was really exciting to see the level of engagement, interaction and sense of community that was created around this content, which I feel represents some of the best I’ve produced. The comments people were leaving on the blog was touching and reinforced my vision for the new program.
The free video series was broadcast to a focus group of 600 people who filled out the survey and this list demonstrated incredible responsiveness. Open rates were over 130% for each email as they began to forward the videos to their friends in a viral fashion (this is not a typo! When we sent out 600 emails, they were opened 800 times as the message was forwarded to friends).
After a week, we pre-launched the new home study program to this list and sold 103 programs (a 17% conversion rate). This is a great result under normal circumstances but it was exceptional given a number of difficult factors. Firstly, we did this from a standing start and sold the product to a list that we had not sold to before. Secondly, the timing was horrible – mid december just before Christmas when everyone was busy, distracted and financially stretched. The final issue was that the product only existed in my head at this stage. The customers who purchased the program invested in a future product that was not available for immediate delivery.
Despite these obstacles the project was a great success. It was really important that we started with a small focus group as it allowed us to dress rehearse the systems and the launch process. In doing so, we’ve identified a number of areas that we have made significant improvements on in preparation for a more global launch which is planned for the end of March.
